Lifeline Express: World's First Hospital Train

By Siji Ram

We've heard about budget trains, season trains, special trains and luxury trains. Here is is hospital train that was started in 1991 to help the poor and under-privileged in the rural areas of India. The train is run by Impact India Foundation, a Mumbai based NGO. This initiative was in collaboration with the Indian Railways and the Health Ministry.

Lifeline express

The LIfeline Express

The train runs through various parts of the country with insufficient medical care, and halts at each station for 21-25 days, during which several treatments are given to the needy in those places, free of cost.

Recently, Lifeline Express has completed 25 successful years of service in India and has treated more than 1,00,000 poor who lived in rural areas of India. Having covered around 2,00,000km of distance across India, the Magic Train of India has treated various treatments for conditions like cardiac disorders, hearing and visual impairments, neurological disorders, etc.

The schedule of Lifeline Express for the year 2016 starts from Karnataka in August. The schedule is as follows:

  • 2nd August-22nd August: Bhatkal, Karnataka
  • 1st September-21st September: Golpara, Assam
  • 5th October-25th October: Ajmer, Rajasthan
  • 9th November-29th November: Kalahandi, Odisha
  • 10th December-30th December: Mohali, Punjab

It is interesting to know that the medical services offered by the train are free, and many poor villagers have been saved by the medical facilities which are otherwise not available in those areas of the country.

They also conduct awareness programmes and other free medical services to the residents of the villages. This train is even visited by people from other places who wish to avail the services of the doctors here.

When travellers and tourists are busy travelling from one corner of the nation to the other on train to see the places they wish to explore, there are a bunch of doctors and technicians supported by the government, who are travelling to places and getting people treated. There are people who work for free, only to save lives and make the lives of others better. This makes Lifeline Express one of the unique trains in India.
