In this article, let us make a visit to Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary in Kerala for a wonder tour! The town of Kumarakom, bordered by the Vembanad Lake, is known for backwater tourism in Kerala. The idyllic environment and pristine waterscapes act as major attractions at Kumarakom.

Set amidst the Vembanad Lake, Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a home to number of birds. One can see the resident birds as well as migratory birds flocking around in the sanctuary. It is also bordered by Kavanar River on the other side. Originally, Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary was called as Baker's Estate. It was created inside a rubber estate amidst the backdrop of Vembanad Lake and the Kavanar River. Now the bird sanctuary is managed by Kerala Tourism Development Corporation.

Birds at Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a home to unique species of resident birds as well as migratory birds who come here during winter. One can see several species of water birds as the sanctuary is bordered by water bodies. Resident birds like ergret, brahminy kite, cormorant, cuckoo, waterfowl, etc. can be seen here. Apart from these, several migratory birds like Siberian crane, flycatcher, marsh harrier, osprey, steppe eagle and so on come here.

Best Time to Visit Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

You can visit this bird sanctuary in two different seasons. One is the migratory season between November to May when birds from various parts of the globe come here. Another season is from June to August which is the breeding season. Both are the best seasons to visit Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary.
