Do You Know About Jungladesh and Its Fort?

It so happens that the second son of a provincial king decides to leave his father's kingdom as he cannot succeed the throne or have any important position in the kingdom. Amidst the arid planes of Thar Desert, he establishes a kingdom with an old stone fort. Some years later, this kingdom becomes one of the popular dynasties in Rajasthan. That is how 'Jungladesh' was formed!

The above story is about Rao Bika who created a kingdom called Jungladesh which became famous as Bikaner in Rajasthan. Rao Bika was none other than the second son of Maharaja Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur. The fortified city of Bikaner had an old stone fort when Rao Bika found the dynasty. It was only later that a new and a big fort was built in front of the old fort called Junagarh Fort.

Each ruler of Bikaner has had his influence on Junargh Fort; numerous palaces, temples and gardens inside the fort is the remainder of such varied architecture.

New Junargh Fort was much bigger and better when compared to the old one. It was Raja Rai Singh who commissioned the construction of Junagarh Fort. Interestingly, it has never been invaded by an enemy except for one-day when Kamran Mirza attacked the fort.

Attractions in Junagarh Fort

Junagarh Fort is a treasured architecture and one of the beautiful forts in Rajasthan; for a heritage lover, it is the fort of dreams as so much is there to explore. It is said that each ruler has added or renovated the fort. Every nook and corner of this fort have something to explore and admire.

To begin with the tour, the gates of Junagarh Fort allures the visitors. It has seven gates and now the Suraj Pol serves as the main entrance. Small intricacies in the architecture and the defensive structures adorning the gates are an attraction in itself.

Second, it is the palaces and temples that reflect the craftsmanship of Rajasthani Architecture. As said earlier, every ruler has constructed some palace or temple inside the fortress. Thus, we can find several temples and palaces here.

Ratan Behari Temple and Har Mandir Temple are the two main temples in the fort. Since the fort structure has different influences, a fusion of architectural styles can be seen. Most prominent styles are Rajasthani, Mughal and Western architecture.

Each of these palaces has uniqueness and style. The usage of marble, red stone architectures, intricately carved walls, murals of these palaces depicts the grandeur of those times. Anup Mahal, Karan Mahal, Ganga Mahal, Badal Mahal and Phool Mahal are the some of the main castles inside Junagarh Fort.

Junagarh Fort Museum is yet another tourist place inside Junagarh Fort. The museum has a collection of artefacts, paintings and other things belonging to the Royals of Bikaner.
