Cave Transformed into a Monastery
Phugtal Monastery was a natural cave in a cliff at Lungnak Valley, Ladakh. The present monastery is built around the natural cave which served as an ideal place for the monks.
In Search of Peace
It is said that the natural cave was there from around 2,500 years before the monastery was constructed. The Buddhist monks, sages and scholars found this cave as a perfect setting for meditation and spiritual learning. It is believed that 16 prime followers of Buddha were the first residents of this cave.

Phuk-Thal
It is known as Phugtal or Phuktal monastery. In the local Zanskari language, 'Phuk' means cave and 'Thal' means at leisure; Phuktal was a hidden place for finding peace and spiritual realisation.
A Long Journey
The only means of transport to Phugtal Monastery is to hitch a ride on a donkey or horse or choose to walk. Some hours drive from the city of Padnum in Zanskar reaches to the road towards the monastery. Almost 6-8 hours voyage through several barren mountain passes will take you to the monastery.
Greenish Villages
Cha and Anmu are the two villages situated near Phugthal monastery. Trekkers often halt at one of these villages on their journey to Phugtal Gompa. Green patches of land surrounding the village show a sign of civilisation and looks like a stark contrast with the barren landscapes on the opposite side.

Relating to Tibetan Buddhism
Jangsem Sherap Zangpo founded Phuktal Monastery during the 14th century. It belongs to the Gelug School of Buddhism, one of the newer schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
Mystic Beauty
Golden barren landscapes and the mountain paths take you to a different world altogether. There are several inscriptions and stupas leading on the way. Phugtal Monastery houses a school for religious learning, prayer halls, library, etc. The frescoed walls of this unique and colourful architecture will leave you awe-struck.
