Biggest Mosque

Jama Masjid in Delhi is the biggest mosque built in India, with its courtyard that can accommodate up to 25,000 devotees at one stretch.

Built by Shah Jahan

Jama Masjid is one of the famous monuments built by emperor Shah Jahan. The other monuments built by him include the iconic Taj Mahal and the Red Fort.

Construction of the Mosque

The mosque was built between 1644 and 1656 with more than 5000 artisans, at a cost of around one million.

Architecture of Jama Masjid

The mosque was built using the Mughal architectural style. Built in strips of red sandstone and white marble, Jama Masjid has three gates, four towers and two minarets that are 40m tall. The prayer hall on the west has 260 pillars and the inscriptions on the tables of the white marbles are related to the reign of Shah Jahan.

Originally named Masjid-i-Jahan-Numa

One of the interesting facts about Jama Masjid in Delhi is that the mosque was originally named Masjid-i-Jahan-Numa which translates to 'mosque reflecting the world'.

Muhammad's Relics and Other Articles in the Mosque

The rare collection in Jama Masjid include relics of Muhammad like Quran that is written on deerskin, his footprint that is engraved on a marble slab and his sandals.

Withstood Attacks on the Mosque

Jama Masjid has witnessed massive attacks on it in 2006 and 2010, killing a few people and injuring several.
