Hidden Treasures of Kerala

Though Kerala is a popular tourist destination since ages, the state has a lot more to offer than the obvious. Apart from the famous backwaters, hill stations and waterfalls that sketch the beauty of Kerala, it also has several unexplored places too. Let's take you to some of the off-beat destinations in Kerala worth exploring!

Pakshipathalam

Pakshipathalam translates as 'Birds' Den' in Malayalam. This beautiful place is located in the Brahmagiri Hills in Wayanad district, close to Thirunelli. The trek to the spot could be quite challenging, yet not to be missed as the views offered by the trek route is amazing. The caves formed out of rocks here are believed to have been inhabited by rishis during ancient times. However, this place is a paradise for bird lovers as it is literally a den of various species of birds.

How to reach Pakshipathalam - Located about 7km from Thirunelli, trekking is the only option to reach Pakshipathalam. The Kerala-Karnataka border is just 2km away from the trek route. The route from Thirunelli takes you to Pakshipathalam via Pancharthodu. The spot is just 500m away from Pancharthodu.

Pythal Mala

This is a beautiful hill station located around 60km from Kannur town. Also known as Vaithal Mala, the place is rich in flora and fauna and the views offered by the region are spellbinding. The hill range spread over 300 acres of land gives tourists a heavenly experience. A trek of around 6km takes you to the peak of the hill range where there is also a hill resort named Pythal Hill Resort for the tourists to relax and enjoy the ambience at Pythal Mala. It also serves as an ideal camping site.

How to reach Pythal Mala - From Kannur town, one can either travel to Pythal Mala via Kudiyanmala or take Kannur-Alakode-Kappimala route to the place. Taking the latter during monsoons can provide you with stunning views of the waterfalls at Kappimala which falls on the route.

Kakkayam

Kakkayam is a picturesque yet unexplored picnic spot located in Kozhikode district of Kerala. One can enjoy the mesmerising beauty of nature as it has a dam, water reservoirs, waterfalls and and an array of hills. The place is also ideal for adventurous activities like trekking and rock climbing.

How to reach Kakkayam - The place is located around 50km from Kozhikode and can be reached easily from Kozhikode. The two routes from Kozhikode are the Kozhikode-Balussery Road and SH38/SH54 Road.

Vazha Mala

Vazha Mala in Kannur district is an unexplored hill range that is even unknown to most of the natives of the place. The breathtaking beauty of the place is beyond words. The forested area surrounding the place gives scope for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike.

How to reach Vazha Mala - The spot is around 50km from Kannur town. It can be reached via Panoor, a small town in Kannur. The place is ideal for a jeep safari as it is nestled among thick forests. A trekking enthusiast can take the challenging route from Kolayad which is perfect for trekking.
