Heritage Travel in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu, the southern state of India boasts of a cultural history of over 4,000 years and continues to charm travellers even today! There is a special allure in the many cities, towns and villages of Tamil Nadu that tempts travellers to keep coming back. The various tempting sights of rich silks, vibrant art forms, magnificent stone temples, delicious cuisine and the many heritage and historical places are among the few things that make Tamil Nadu a popular travel destination in the country. In fact, Tamil Nadu recently received recognition as having the largest tourism industry in the country as per the data published by the Tourism Ministry.

A large part of tourism in the state is directed to the places of historic significance. Heritage sites that provide tantalising glimpses into the political, artistic and cultural mindsets of the past are among the top picks for travellers looking for more than scenic vistas. Here is a list of both popular and lesser known heritage places in Tamil Nadu.

Arjuna's Penace

Arjuna's Penace

Among the group monuments located at Mahabalipuram that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites is the popular bas-relief structure of Arjuna's Penace. The unique structure comprises of sculptures done on two large boulders of pink granite. The over 146 sculptures of people, animals, gods and other mythological characters depicts the legend of Arjuna performing penance in order to attain a boon from Lord Shiva to help him in the war of Mahabharata. The artistic and sculptural beauty of the various monuments located at Mahabaliburam is a must-visit for all history and art lovers.

Fort St.George

Fort St.George

Located in the capital city of Chennai, an important heritage place to visit is the St.George Fort. Also known as White Town, it is the first English fort to be built in India back in the year 1644. The fort serving the British for most part is now the headquarters of the legislative assembly of Tamil Nadu. The fort consists of popular attractions such as the museum displaying various relics from the British rule and the oldest English church in India, the St.Mary's Church.

Genji Fort

Genji Fort

Among the popular forts in Tamil Nadu is the Genji or Ginjee Fort in Villapuram district. It has its origins in the 9th century and is believed to have first been constructed by the Chola Kings, however modifications and additions were done by various other rulers including the Nayak Kings. The impressive fort is built on a set of three hills and the fort walls surrounding the complex span an area of over 13 km. Other noteworthy features of the fort include the 80 ft wide moat, tall citadels, seven-storey marriage hall, temples and even a pond called Aanaikulam that is considered holy.

Manora Fort

Manora Fort

Built by the Maratha King Serfoji, considered a friend and ally of the British, the fort marked the successful advance of the British in the Battle of Waterloo. The fort also acted as the residence of the royal family. The main structure is hexagonal and consists of eight storeys, rising to a height of 75 ft. Located on the shores of the Bay of Bengal, the fort is indeed a picturesque setting.

Padmanabhapuram Palace

Padmanabhapuram Palace

Situated in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, this popular heritage place actually rolls up under the Kerala Government. Constructed in 1601 AD, the palace saw many modifications and additions over the years. The palace is a stellar example of the exquisite Kerala architecture, and consists of various structures that boast of superb wood work and carvings. Travellers can explore the Council Chamber, Queen's Mother's Palace, Souther Palace, etc. Be amazed observing the relics on display such as the weapons that were used in warfare, the various gifts of tradesmen, a polished stone cot and even a wooden cot that is made up of the wood from 64 different medicinal trees!

Sivaganga Palace

Sivaganga Palace

The palace also known as Gowri Vilasam is located in Shivaganga district of Tamil Nadu. Among the interesting historical places in the region, the palace is now mostly in ruins. Once the seat of power for the Marava Kings, the remnant ruins display stunning architecture that seems to have influences of other styles such as of the Nayak and Rajput styles. The palace consists of the Sri Raja Rajeshwari temple and the Nadai Kinaru or a small swimming pool that was meant for the women of the royal family. The temple can be visited in the morning and evening hours.

Vellore Fort

Vellore Fort

Built by the Vijayanagara Kings, the Vellore Fort is among the popular places to visit in Vellore city. The 16th century fort has a vivid history from the time that it was the seat of power for the Vijayanagar Kings to the change of hands with the rule of the Sultans, Marathas and even the British. The interesting mix of influences is reflected in the structures of the fort that consists of a mosque, temple and church. Constructed with granite, the fort had many formidable fortifications, including the large moat that is said to have once had many killer crocodiles. The fort was also used as a prison across its history. Travellers can also make an informative tour of the museum located here.

Thanjavur Palace

Thanjavur Palace

Among the most popular heritage attractions in Madurai, the Thanjavur Palace was originally built by the Nayak Kings. The palace later was the royal residence of the Maratha rulers. The beautiful temple complex showcases an interesting confluence of architecture that is supported by vibrant interiors, complete with sculptures and vivid wall frescos. The interiors of Durbar Hall at the palace will not fail to astound travellers. The other structures located within the complex are; the Sadar Mahal Palace, Saraswati Mahal Library, Royal Palace Museum, Queen's Courtyard, etc.

Thirumalai Nayak Mahal

Thirumalai Nayak Mahal

The grandest palace structure in Madurai is the Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal. Built in the 17th century by the King Thirumalai Nayak after whom the palace is named, the structure is a fine example of architectural styles that are both Dravidian and Islamic. The astonishing fact as you gaze through the vast courtyards of the palace is that the original structure was over four times its current size! The rich interiors showcase thick pillars and intricate sculptures. The palace comes alive during the light and sound show conducted by the tourism board that depicts the story of Silappathikaram, considered to be among the five great epics of Tamil literature.

Best Time to Visit Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is among the best travel destinations in the country that can be visited during the months of September-February. Summer months are best avoided as the soaring temperatures dissuade travellers from exploring.
