Hampi Utsav: Restoring the Ruins

By Shruthi

The first thought that the word 'Hampi' brings to mind is 'ruins'. The great ruins of a great empire, that is what Hampi is projected to be. Karnataka Tourism has made efforts to undo that very thought. Immerse yourself in an experience called Hampi with the 'Hampi Utsav'.

Hampi, which lies in the Bellary district of Karnataka, is one of India's many forsaken lands. It probably has the most heart-wrenching story to narrate. Hampi was a part of the thriving capital city of the Vijaynagara Empire from 1336 to 1565 after which it was laid to dust by the Deccan Muslim confederacy and it was forever abandoned. The three-day Hampi Utsav which starts on January 10 aims to restore the splendour of the Vijayanagara empire in the eyes of a new generation.

Hampi is a site rich with mythological narratives and legends. The Vittala temple is another popular monument at Hampi that is home to many legends. All chances are that the stories you probably heard as a child were created right here. The stone chariot at the Vittala temple is the face of Hampi. It is said that the chariot was once mobile. As opposed to popular notion, it is not carved out of a single stone but built with many granite blocks.

Potpourri of Cultures

Potpourri of Cultures

Hampi portrays the grandeur of the Vijayanagara Empire but after the place was taken over by the Sultanates there was a fusion of Hindu and Islamic culture . The zenana enclosure portrays the Arabic and Persian side of Hampi in its ruins. The highlight of this aspect is the Lotus Mahal that is built to mirror a half-opened lotus bud. The illumination at night during Hampi Utsav will make it even more attractive to the eye.
