Travel to the Majestic Forts of Maharashtra

Maharashtra is the financial capital of India thanks to the various industrial sectors here. It is also home to Bollywood, which is known to churn out movies every week. Travellers coming to this state are spoilt for choice as there are too many places for them to head to here. It is a major tourists hotspot and has travellers coming here around the year.

Of the many attractions that line this state mention must be made of the innumerable forts that can be seen here. These old forts were built by the kings in order to protect their region and to ward off enemies. Today these forts stand still to recount stories of the past and to remind visitors of the power struggles that took place here. Here is a look at a few of the majestic forts of Maharashtra.

Ahmednagar Fort
One of the major attractions in the town of Ahmednagar is the old Ahmednagar Fort that was built by Ahmed Nizam Shah in the mid 15th century. The fort is known to have served as a place where the prisoners of war were held captive. This fort was also used by the British to imprison several revolutionary leaders. Tourists coming here can explore this fort and visit the many prisons that once held our leaders.

Gavilgarh Fort
Another ancient fort in the state of Maharashtra is the Gavilgarh Fort, believed to have been built 300 years ago. It was constructed by Ahmad Shah Wali and was built as a defence system in the region. The fort consisted of a mosque and eight water tanks. Tourists visiting the fort can see two of the tanks that are still in working condition and also admire the intricate carvings of various animals on the walls of the fort.

Panhala Fort
The Panhala Fort is the most magnificent fort in the Deccan region and was built by Raja Bhoj in the 12th century. The fort was built as a defence against enemy attacks on the kingdom and tourists coming here can enter it through its double wall protection. It takes you back in time and leaves you mesmerised by its majestic nature.

Udgir Fort
The Udgir Fort is another ancient fort in Maharashtra built by the Maratha kings to protect the land from the onslaught of the Nizams. It is a traveller's paradise as it has many attractions here which include the throne room of the king, located 60 ft underground along with several logs that date back centuries. Another attraction here is a deep moat that surrounds the fort ensuring enemy soldiers can't get across easily.

Naldurg Fort
The Naldurg Fort in the Osmanabad district was constructed by the Bahmani Sultans who ruled over the region. It was previously known as Yeral Fort but after the Mughals took over the place they renamed it with its present name. The fort itself is a historic wonder, depicting a classic Indo-Islamic style of architecture. Tourists coming here can marvel at the beauty of this fort and explore it.

Karnala Fort
Another major attraction in Maharashtra is the Karnala Fort, located within the Karnala Bird Sanctuary in the Raigad district. The fort is said to have been built by Syed Nuruddin Muhammad Khan during the Mughal reign. Today, the fort is used by forest officials to keep a watch on the sanctuary. Tourists coming here can explore the sanctuary as well as the fort.

Bassein Fort
The Bassein Fort is said to have been constructed by Bahadur Shah, who later gave it to the Portuguese settlers in the region as they were being attacked by other foreign traders. The fort that is presently known as Vasai Fort is a major tourist attraction in the district of Thane. You can explore the fort and learn more about its history here.
