Travel to the Amazing Forts of Kerala

Kerala, better known as God's Own Country, has rich culture, traditions and heritage. The state is known as one of the prime trading regions along the coast and had many foreign communities coming here to do business. The spice trade here led to many of these traders fighting against one another to take control of this land. This political struggle led to the construction of forts that were symbols of power and marked the territories of the traders.

With the passage of time, these forts have weathered down but still stand tall showcasing the splendour they once held. Tourists coming to Kerala will always be fascinated by the greenery and the backwaters of this state. But for those who want a taste of history and to delve into the rich culture that once flourished here must certainly visit these forts as they have their own story to tell. Here is a look at some of the forts of Kerala.

Bekal Fort

Bekal Fort

One of places to visit in Kerala is the Bekal Fort that stands tall amidst a beach. It is believed that the fort was constructed by the Chirakkal Rajas as a defense against enemies coming from the sea. Tourists coming here can explore this huge fort and also get a beautiful view of the vast sea from its top.

Palakkad Fort

Palakkad Fort

A tourist place to visit in Kerala is the Palakkad Fort, popularly known as Tipu's Fort. It was constructed in the year 1766 by Haider Ali who used this as a military base where the soldiers were trained in various battle techniques. Tourists coming here can marvel at the weapons that are kept here which are believed to have been used by the soldiers. You can also explore the fort and visit a shrine dedicated to Lord Hanuman.

Pallipuram Fort

Pallipuram Fort

Another place to visit in Kerala is the Pallipuram Fort located in the Ernakulam District. The fort is believed to have been built in the year 1503 by the Portuguese settlers. It is said that the fort was used by the Portuguese to shield themselves from the attack of the regional kings. Tourists coming here can marvel at the remains of this fort. Though it has lost much of its original splendour, the ageing fort still holds a charm that attracts many travellers.

Thalassery Fort

Thalassery Fort

Another tourist place to visit in Kerala is the Thalassery Fort, built in 1708 by the British East India Company. The fort is built on a cliff located near the Muzhapilangad Beach and was a defense against unwanted attacks from the sea. Tourists coming here can explore this old fort and be amazed by its grandeur. You can also head to the beach here and enjoy a calm and relaxing day.

Fort St. Angelo

Fort St. Angelo

The St. Angelo Fort, also known as Kannur Kotta is located in the town of Kannur and offers a magnificent view of the Arabian Sea. Built in the year 1505 by Don Francisco de Almeid, who was the Portuguese Viceroy in India, this fort served as a defence against any sea attacks. Tourists coming here today can explore this fort and enjoy the beautiful view that it has to offer.

St Thomas Fort

St Thomas Fort

The St. Thomas Fort, which is popularly known as Tangaserri Fort, is located in Kollam. The fort is said to have been built by the Chinese settlers here who were attacked occasionaly by the Portuguese and the British. Though the fort now lies in ruins, tourists who venture here are left amazed by its beauty.
