Travel to the 10 Enormous Forts of India

India is a land known for its ancient forts and monuments,which describe its deep manifested past. Two of the forts are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Agra fort and the Red fort. These forts are the country's treasure and presents to us the magnamity of the Royal Kingdoms that once ruled here.

One of the most attractive aspects of these many grand forts are that they are spread around the entire country. They are sure to leave you mesmerised by their beauty and grandeur and are located in some of the most scenic places which attracts nature lovers, adventurers and tourists. Here is a guide to the ten enormous forts of India.

Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh Fort

TheMehrangarh Fort is located in the city of Jodhpur in Rajasthan and is more then 500years old.It is one of the largest forts in India and is situated 400 mt above the city. It was founded by Rao Jodha and boasts of seven gates each built to comemorate the Maharaja's victory. Inside the fort, several brilliantly crafted anddecoratedpalaces are found like Moti Mahal, Sheesh Mahal and more. There is a Chamunda Devi temple and museum situated inside the fort and the museum is one of the most well-stocked museums in Rajasthan.

Red Fort Delhi

Red Fort Delhi

Lal Quila or the Red Fort is one of the most important historical buildings in India and is located in Delhi. This famous monument was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. Due to the thick red sandstone walls it is also known as Red Fort. Important structures inside the fort includes a mosque known as Moti Masjid an audience chamber called Diwan-i-Aam and more. The fort lies along the Yamuna River and is believed to be the most powerful symbol of India's sovereignty. The Prime Minister of India addresses the nation and raises the flag of India on Independence and Republic Day of India from here.

Gwalior Fort

Gwalior Fort

One of the places to visit in Gwalior is the Gwalior Fort, a massive monument standing on a hilltop. It was built by Raja Man Sing Tomar in order to defend his boundaries from attack of neighbouring kings. Popularly called the 'Gibraltar of India' it gives tourists visiting here a birds eye view of the beautiful valley and the city below. You can also explore the fort and walk through its zig zag pathways.

Golconda Fort

Golconda Fort

A tourist attraction in Hyderabad is the Golconda Fort, which was once a flourishing city but is now mostly in ruins. The fort was constructed under the supervision of Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah Wali in the 15th century with the purpose of defending the city from the Mughal invaders. The unique feature about this fort is that should you make some noise standing in the Patio, you would be able to hear that voice from the highest point of the fort. Tourists come here to explore the mega fort and also to enjoy the scenic views of the surrounding areas.

Jaisalmer Fort

Jaisalmer Fort

Jaisalmer Fort is one of the largest fort situated in the state of Rajasthan and was built by Rawal Jaisal. The magnificent foundation of Jaisalmer Fort is situated in the midst of the sandy terrain ofthe GreatThar Desert. It is also known as Sonar Quila and is built on the triangular shaped Trikuta hill. It is the second oldest fort in the state of Rajasthan and the major attractions inside are Jain temples, Royal palace and its enormous gates.

Agra Fort

Agra Fort

It is one of the most important fort in India situated in Agra,Uttar Pradesh. Sikandar Lodi who was the first Sultan of Delhi, shifted to Agra and lived in this fort. The fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site and it lies on the banks of the river Yamuna. It is also often referred to as Agra Fort. Travellers coming here can explore the fort and admire its architecture.

Kangra Fort

Kangra Fort

The famous Kangra Fort built bythe Royalfamily of Kangra is situated at the confluence of the Banganga and Manjhi Rivers in Himachal Pradesh. It is the largest fort in the Himalayas and the oldest fort in India. The fort is known to house the Vajreshwari temple which sees may devotees flocking here round the year.

Chittorgarh Fort

Chittorgarh Fort

One of the major tourist attraction in Chittorgarh is its mighty Chittorgarh Fort. This fort which was built by the Mauryans stands 180 mt high, on top of a hillock and covers an area of about 700 acres. The architectural brilliance of the fort cannot be described in words! It has seven iron gates, each of which are named after a Hindu god. Also the palaces of Rani Padmini and Maharana Kumbha are locted within the fort. It is a hub for archeologists who have much to explore and learn from here. It also attracts photographers who come here to capture the beauty of this majestic architecture.

Panhala Fort

Panhala Fort

Panhala Fort is the largest fort in Maharashtra and is located over a pass in the Sahyadri mountain range near Kolhapur. The fort structures represents the architectural beauty ofthe greatMaratha Empire. It is believed that this fort was built by Shivaji,the greatMaratha warrior. Travellers coming here can explore the fort and enjoy the scenic beauty that surrounds it.

The Srirangapatnam Fort in Karnataka and is situated near to the holy river Kaveri. Srirangapatnam Fort or Tipu Sultan's Palace as it is called, is one of the prominent monuments in here. It is a perfect place to head to if you are looking for an adventure and love exploring. Also the natural surrounding of this place makes it worth a visit.
