Dubare Elephant Camp in Coorg

Dubare Elephant Camp is an opportunity to learn about the elephants in a natural habitat. It is situated on the banks of river Kaveri near Kushalnagar in Coorg district. It is one of the prominent places to visit in Coorg and tourists will love the rustic beauty of this place.

Dubare is maintained by the Jungle Lodges and Resorts in co-operation with the Forest Department of Karnataka.

Dubare is historically important, among 150 Elephant Camps in Karnataka. The elephants in this camp were trained for the famous Mysore Dasara festival. In the recent past, the elephants in the camp are not selected for Dasara, most of them are retired. Hence, this forest resort is a project created to promote eco-tourism and the conservation of this endangered animals (elephants).

One can try various activities in Dubare Elephant Camp: watch the elephants getting scrub bath, the oil massage they're given before the bath, watch the preparation of food for elephants, coracle ride in the Kaveri river and go on an elephant ride inside the forest reserve.

Tourist can also get involved in the activities of grooming elephants. They can give bath to elephants with the help of the mahuts (elephant trainers). A naturalist will be present to explain about the biology, history and behaviour of elephants.

This place is also a heaven for bird watchers; river bank and the forest is a home for many colourful birds. A visit to Dubare Camp should not be missed if you are an elephant lover. Since, the camp is a forest area, it is not uncommon to sight deers, monkeys and other animals in the area.

Dubare Camp is a blend of many activities; one can also go on boating and river rafting. Visitors can also stay in the jungle lodges to enjoy the feel of forest and the calm environment. It is better to visit the camp early in the morning (6 am -11 am) because most activities like elephant bath happens within this time.

Tourists can watch a movie on wildlife in Gol Ghar inside the camp. The interaction with naturalist and the movie will give you more information on the conservation of animals. It is also an awareness program to spread the harmful effects of hunting and the dangers which these elephants are facing in the wild.
