Best Trekking Excursions in Kerala – Part 2

Kerala is best known for its scenic views and natural wonders. The state also has some amazing trekking spots for adventure lovers. Rich with wildlife and vegetation, a few forests and hill stations in Kerala are ideal spots for treks.

In our previous article, we have already covered a few trekking spots that you would love to explore during a trip to Kerala. Here we discuss a few more of them that you should not miss.

Chimmini

The Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary is a trekking destinations where you can enjoy bird watching as you trek the trail. Having rare species of birds in the forest, it is a true delight to listen to their chirps as you progress through the forest. The highest point here is the Punda Peak.

If you are lucky enough, you could spot the Southern Birdwing (largest butterfly in India) or Atlas Moth (largest butterfly in the world). You can also enjoy bamboo rafting here.

Travel Tips
The Chimmini Sanctuary is located in Thrissur district near Amballur. It is on the Ernakulam-Thrissur road and 12 km from Amballur. The Thrissur railway station is just 37 km away from the sanctuary. The best time to visit the sanctuary is from December to April.

Pythal Mala

Pythal Mala is a hill station close to Kannur town. A 6 km trek takes you to the peak of the hill range. The views offered by this point is breathtaking and there is also a hill resort where travellers can spend their nights camping on the hilltop.

This trek route is apt for photography lovers. Apart from the stunning views offered by the lush green hills, the ruins of a tribal King can also be found along the trek route.

Travel Tips
Kannur is the closest town to Pythal Mala which is about 60 km away from the place. One can reach the spot either from Kudiyanmala or can take the Kannur-Alakode-Kappimala route. If you travel from Kannur, the road is filled with scenic views of waterfalls at Kappimala. The best time to trek here is from January to March.

Thusharagiri

The misty mountains of Thusharagiri are popular for two aspects. It has stunning waterfalls and also has a trek route that starts at the waterfalls. The trek along this path has immense scope for natural beauty with lush green forests and gushing waters on either sides.

This place is not only ideal for trekking, it also offers adventure activities like rock climbing and camping. The 8 km trek also gives you an opportunity for birdwatching as well.

Travel Tips
The scenic wonders not to be missed on this trek route are Mele Thenpara, Erattumukku Waterfalls, Mazhavil Chattam, Thonnikayal, Thumbithullum Para and Pooncholapara. Another trek route takes you to Vythiri in Wayanad through the thick woodlands at Thusharagiri. However, advance bookings are to be made with the forest department if you intend to take a trek here.
