Kerala has been a nature lover's favourite since ages unknown. With its gushing waterfalls, serene backwaters, scenic hill stations and more, Kerala has not failed to grab attention from the travellers around the globe.

Apart from the obvious tourist spots that the state has to offer, Kerala is also a great place for trekking enthusiasts. The hill stations here are best known for their scenic surroundings and wildlife. Trekkers can take a trail through these forests and peaks to have a closer look at nature that's far from the cities.

Munnar

Munnar is one of the best holiday destinations of Kerala. The lush greens hills are also home to the highest peak of South India, the Anamudi. Trekking in Munnar is a delight for those who love greenery and beauty all around. Anamudi peak is however a restricted area and thus not apt for trekking or other activities. Eravikulam National Park also can be explored during your trip to Munnar.

Another speciality of Munnar is that Neelakurinji, a beautiful blue flower blooms in these hills once in every 12 years. Tourists throng the place to have a look at the blue-carpeted hills. Travel Tips

Though Munnar has a pleasant climate throughout the year, the months from August to may would be ideal for a trip. If you are travelling by road, the hill station is easily accessible from all major tourist destinations nearby.

The nearest railway station is at Aluva which is 110 km away from Munnar.

Agasthyarkoodam Peak

Agasthyarkoodam Peak or the Agasthyakoodam Peak was the abode of the saint Agastha was believed to be a bachelor throughout his life. A trek through the forests that is now inhabited by the triabals of the area, is a rewarding experience as the whole forests is full of rare medicinal plants among the lush forests. Once the hilltop is reached, a spectacular view awaits you where you can see the Arabian Sea on one side and the hilly terrains on the other.

A peculiarity of this peak is that women are not allowed to trek to the peak through the forests. This is because it is believed that the tribals here have a dislike for women for a reason that's yet to be explored and found! A pass from the Warden of the Forest Department is needed to trek here.

Travel Tips

The best time to travel to the peak is from December to March.

The peak is located around 60 km from Thiruvananthapuram city which is well-connected to all the major cities of the state. The trek length would be around 25 km, which means you need two days to complete it with ease. Another point to be considered is that there are no hospitals nearby the peak, so make sure you carry a first aid kit with you. The nearest town to the peak are Nedumangad, Kollam and Neyyar.
