Saraswati Temple Koothanur, Thiruvarur

3

Saraswati Temple at Koothanur is one of the rare shrines dedicated to the worship of Saraswati, the Goddess of learning in Hindu mythology. Usually the goddess is worshipped alongside other deities in temples and a temple dedicated to the worship of Goddess is very rare. In fact, it is the only temple for Goddess Saraswati in the whole of Tamil Nadu.

The temple is located in Koothanoor which is some 25 km away from Thiruvarur, along the MayiladuthuraiThiruvarur route. Koothanoor is also famous for being the spot where the poet Ottakoothar was born. Koothanoor is also believed to be the place where the three holy rivers, Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati, merge.

They together form the Harisol river or the Arasalaru river, as it is known colloquially. Vijayadasami is the most celebrated festival that is celebrated in the temple. The best time of the year to visit the temple would be during the days of Vijayadasami and Mahanavami.
