Oppiliyappan Temple, Thirunageswaram

The Oppiliyappan Temple is situated about 1/2 km from Thirunageswaram and approximately 7 km south of Kumbakonam city. The temple is one among the one hundred and eight Divyadesas of Perumal and is the birth place (Avatar Sthala) of Bhoomadevi.

The main deity of the temple is Perumal (Lord Vishnu) who is worshipped as Oppiliyappan here and his consort is Bhoomadevi. The temple is about 2000 years old. The Naganathaswamy Temple is also located close to this temple.

In this temple the nivedhanas (Food offering) is made without any salt and it is also said that if anybody brings salty foods in the temple it would be considered as a sin. It is said that if one worships mother Bhoomadevi and Lord Perumal in this temple, he or she will develop tolerance with their spouse and will have a harmonious marital life.

The main festival celebrated in Oppiliyappan temple is Brahmmotsavam which takes place in the months of Aipasi (October to November), Purattasi (September to October) and Panguni (March to April).
