The Vasota Fort and the Jaygad Fort are a couple of historic, ancient forts that stood strong and resilient at one point in time but now have drifted into oblivion. The Vasota Fort is located in the depth of the green forests of the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary, near the Shivsagar Lake.

It was built by King Bhojraj II of the Shilahar Dynasty and later came under the great Shivaji Maharaj. The Fort was earlier known as the Vyaghragad Fort and is divided into three main forts – The Juna Vasota, the Navin Vasota and the Nageshwar.

The Fort stands tall at a height of 1,200 m above sea level and is surrounded by water on three of its four sides. The forts are now enveloped by dangerous, lofty cliffs, dizzying mountain peaks and a thick green forest.

There is plenty of wildlife too to be found here, like snakes, foxes, bears and tigers. Adventurous trekkers will enjoy trekking up the difficult path of the Vasota Fort but be mindful of the dangers lurking there.
