  • 01Thanumalayan Temple

Thanumalayan Temple in Suchindram is one of the most visited temples in South India, and it is not difficult to guess why. One can see the entrance of the temple from far away because the temple tower stands majestically at a height of 134 ft. The tower features statues and sculptures of various Hindu gods and goddesses and has depictions of scenes and events taken from Hindu mythology.

The entrance to the temple consists of an intricately carved door that stands tall at an imposing height of 24 ft. The temple has only one corridor right next to the outer wall. This corridor has mandapams and shrines distributed in a haphazard manner along its length.

The temple is dedicated to about thirty Hindu gods and goddesses and is therefore, popular among the devotees of both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. The sanctum has a large lingam as well as an idol of Vishnu placed right next to the lingam.

    Colachel

Colachel is a municipal town that lies on the Malabar Coast and is about 20 km from the town of Kanyakumari. Not many people are aware of the town of Colachel which is a pity since the place has been witness to the famous Battle of Colachel.

The battle was fought on the grounds of Colachel in 1741, and has gone down in the history of India as being the only time that an Indian kingdom defeated the naval forces of a European country. A Dutch fleet landed in the area around Colachel with the intention of looting the place.

MarthandaVarma, the ruler of Travancore defeated the Dutch forces so bad that they could never colonise any other part of India.

Victory in this battle was a big achievement for the army of a small kingdom. In fact, many Dutch soldiers were also captured. Among these captured soldiers was Admiral D’lennoy who later became the Senior Admiral in the army of Marthanda Varma and served the king for 20 long years.
