Chengalpattu is said to have been named after a kind of lily called ‘Chenkazhuneer poo’ which is found in large numbers in the region. The major attraction of Chengalpattu is Kolavai Lake where the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation had established a boathouse.
However, the boathouse is currently not in operation. Chengalpattu also houses the famous Chingleput fort built by the Vijaynagara kings. It has a rich history of the colonial times.
