Solan Attractions - Tourist Places To Visit In Solan

Sholoni Devi Temple, dedicated to the Hindu Goddess, Sholoni Devi, is located in the district of Solan in Himachal Pradesh. Solan is a derivation of the name of the presiding deity, Sholoni Devi. The natural beauty of the place amplifies the temple’s spiritual ambience and attracts numerous visitors.

The famous Sholoni Fair celebrated at this temple brings visitors in a large number every year to the Sholoni Devi Temple grounds. Wrestling contests are also held in this fair.

Kuthar Fort is considered as one of the major tourist attractions of the Solan District. The oldest structures of this fort are around 800 years old while the recent structures are just 80 years old. This fort covers a large area and tourists can find several fresh-water springs here.

Nalagarh Palace is an important tourist attraction of the Solan District. The town of Nalagarh is also referred to as the gateway to Himachal Pradesh, and it once served as the capital of the state of Hindur. King Surendra Singh was the last king of Nalagarh, and at present, Raja Vijayendra, his son is the ceremonial head of the place.

The palace is known for its architecture, which is a blend of Indian and Mughal styles, and was recently converted into a deluxe heritage resort.

Majathal Sanctuary is a popular wildlife centre situated in the district of Solan. Covering an area of around 55,670 sq km, this wildlife centre was first declared as a sanctuary in 1962. It was re-notified as a sanctuary in 1974 by the government of Himachal Pradesh.

The sanctuary is home to various species of flora and fauna. However, it is widely popular for its gorals and cheer pheasants. The goral is a small animal having cylindrical horns similar to those of a goat, while the cheer pheasant is a bird with a long tail.

Some of the other animals that can be spotted here include the leopard, the Himalayan black bear, the barking deer, the Himalayan palm civet, the jungle cat, the yellow throated marten, the Indian wild bear, and the langur, to name a few. Rare birds like the black francolin and the oriental white backed vulture can also be spotted in the sanctuary.

Travellers can reach this sanctuary via the Shimla-Bilaspur Road. Since there is no direct transportation to this sanctuary, tourists have to stop at Kashlog, which lies on the Shimla-Bilaspur Road, and then walk to the sanctuary from there. The winter season is considered as the ideal time to visit this sanctuary. Accommodation here is available in the form of jungle houses.

Kiarighat is a beautiful place, located at a distance of around 19 km from the district of Solan on the route to Shimla from Chandigarh. Once a Dak Bungalow, the place is presently famous as a tourist stop over destination. The Himachal Pradesh Tourist Department Corporation (HPTDC) now runs a popular economy class hotel here known as The Apple Cart Inn.
