    The Ratanmahal Sloth Bear Sanctuary is located near Sardar Sarovar Dam and is known to be a dangerous place if you opt to go alone or with just a person to accompany you. The sanctuary is home to sloth bears and other deadly animals like leopards, the palm civet, the Indian civet, four-horned antelope, langurs, etc. It is always advised to go in bigger groups with the guards guiding you.

    Eleven villages surround the sanctuary with a population of around 7000. The sanctuary covers an area of 55.65 sq km. It is located in Dahod district in the state of Gujarat. The sanctuary has plenty of dry teak forests and mixed deciduous forests too. The forest also has dry bamboo brakes in abundance.

    The sloth bears here feed on the mahuda trees which is also their favourite food. Though it is risky to travel alone to this sanctuary, it is definitely a rewarding experience for those who love adventure. One should make sure that he travels only in large groups to this area.

    The Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Narmada district in the state of Gujarat. It has about 575 species of flowering plants and is a deciduous forest with an abundance of semi-evergreen trees. It also has plenty of bamboo trees. The forest is rated as one of the thickest and best forests in the state.

    The sanctuary is spread over an area of 607.70 sq km and has a wide variety of species like the sloth bear, leopard, Rhesus macaque, Chausinga, Barking deer, Pangolin and Herpetofauna. The sanctuary is known for its eco-tourism. You may find large varieties of migratory birds, flying squirrels, etc. here along with the other animals.

    Mythological Relevance Of Bharuch

    The place has a lot of mythological relevance. According to Hindu mythology, the Skanda Purana says that Bharuch was the residing place of Goddess Lakshmi before it was visited by Bhrigu Rishi who visited the place which was once a village.

    Apart from its mention in Skanda Purana, Bharuch has found its relevance in Bhagavata Purana, Shiva Purana, Kurma Purana, Matsya Purana, Ramayana and the like. The Jain mythology and Buddhist mythology too have mentioned Bharuch in their scriptures. The place is, however, considered as a Tirtha for the Jain community.

    An Important Business Centre

    Since the first century AD, the Bharuch port was considered as a major seaport till the 16th century since the Arab traders used to enter Gujarat via Bharuch for business purposes. The British and Valandas also considered Bharuch as an important centre for business. It was the regular terminus for coastal shipping of spice and silk between the East and the West.

    Other Flourishing Industries Of Bharuch

    The largely industrialised city of Bharuch is also known for its other resources like textile mills, chemical plants, long staple cotton and dairy products. The biggest liquid cargo terminal is located in Bharuch and it is also a shipping centre which is famous for its salty peanuts. The city is often referred to as Kanam Pradesh which means “black soil land” due to the colour of its soil.

    Festivals Of Bharuch

    Since people from many ethnic and religious communities reside in Bharuch, the locals here celebrate almost every festival in its full glory. Major Indian festivals, like Diwali, Navratri, Ganesh Chaturthi, Holi, etc., are celebrated here with all its grandeur.

    Bharuch is the only place in the world that celebrates Megharaj Festival (rain festival) which happens during the month of Shravan. A 5.5 ft idol of Lord Indra, made from the soil of Narmada river, is worshipped for 25 days. During the last 4 days of the festival, a mela (fair) is organised here. The other major festival conducted here is the Chandi Padvo which occurs around the month of October.
