Saputara Tourism - Of Galvanic Vistas

Saputara is a distinctly different place amongst the arid nature of Gujarat. It is on the north-east frontier of Gujarat and the second highest plateau in the Sahydari stretch of the Western Ghats. Nestled in the Dang forest area of the Sahyadri Range, Saputara is a picturesque hill station that brings a much welcome diversity with the lush greenery.

Mythological Connection

There is a legend that Lord Rama had stayed here for a long period during his exile. Saputara means the 'Abode of Serpents'. The population of the Dang forest, where Saputara is located, is 90% adivasi and these tribals worship an image of a snake at the banks of the Sarpaganga River during festivals like Nagapanchami or Holi.

Saputara experiences a uniform weather all through the year. It's cool climate provides an ideal escape from the sun-scorched plains of Gujarat. Situated at an altitude of about 873 m from the sea level, the highest temperature, even in summer do not go beyond 28 °C. During the monsoon, the forest receives ample of rain and becomes even more green. Middle of March to middle of November is the ideal time to visit Saputara.

Saputara is only 172km. from Surat and Maharashtra state border is only 4km away from Saputara. Billimora is the most convenient Railway connect and the nearest Airport is Surat.

Saputara has many water bodies like brooks, streams and lakes in the region. Though Saputara has experienced a lot of development as a tourism center with all the required amenities like hotels, parks, swimming pools, boat club, theaters, rope ways and a museum, still it has managed to retain the unspoilt beauty of nature. It has many points like the Saputara Lake, Sunset Point, Sunrise Point, Echo Point, Town-view Point, and Gandhi Shikhar. Gandharvapur Artist Village,Vansda National park, Purna Sanctuary, Rose garden, Ropeway are some other tourist attractions of Saputara. One can also visit the wild life sanctuary in the Mahal Bardipara forest that is 60km from here and Gira Waterfalls, that's 52km away.

Mahal Bardipura has many rivers and bamboo tracts, offering fabulous walking and trekking options to the tourists.Not to miss the pleasant surprise of seeing the lush greenery of Saputara, amidst the arid Gujarat, one should definitely include this place in the itinerary.
