    Rudranath Temple

    Rudranath Temple is located at an elevation of 2286 m above sea level in Rudranath. The temple, dedicated to the Hindu Lord Shiva, holds a great religious significance among the Hindus. In the temple, the face of Lord Shiva is worshipped as Neelkantha Mahadeva.

    According to mythology, after the war of the Mahabharata, the Pandavas came to the Himalayas to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva for their sins. However, Lord Shiva did not wish to meet them and escaped in the form of Nandi Bull. The Pandavas spotted the bull in Guptakashi and tried to catch him but in vain.

    Later, Lord Shiva’s body parts were discovered at five different places of the Garhwal region, which are known as Panch Kedar now. The Rudranath Temple stands on the spot where His face was found.

    Tourists can reach the temple from Sagar Village and Joshimath by trekking. The route from Joshimath is 45 km long. The temple offers mesmerising views of Hathi Parvat, Nanda Devi, Nanda Ghunti and Trishul to visitors. The holy tanks, namely Surya Kund, Chandra Kund, Tara Kund and Mana Kund are located near the temple.

    Panar Bugiyal

    Panar Bugiyal is one of the most beautiful meadows in Rudranath, which is filled with wild flowers. It is a trek of around 8 km from the destination and offers scenic views to travellers. Another trekking route leading to this enchanting meadow starts from the Sagar Village. Tourists can also see a waterfall and a temple located close to this region.

    Pitradhar

    Pitradhar is located at an elevation of 4000 m above sea level and offers a bird’s eye view of the beautiful valley. This is the highest point of the Rudranath trekking route. This route passes through the lush green meadows, ridges and crags. The tough terrain and elevated cliffs make it one of the difficult trekking trails of the Garhwal region.

    Nandikund

    Nandikund is a beautiful lake situated amidst lush green meadows and surrounded by snow-clad peaks. The lake is devoted to the Hindu Lord Shiva, and it is believed that His mount, Nandi Bull used to drink water from here. One of the main attractions of this lake is a corroded sword seen close to the lake.

    According to a popular belief, the sword belongs to the Pandavas, the royal warriors from the Indian epic, the Mahabharata. In the lake, tourists can also see the reflection of the Chaukhamba Peak. During summers, the water of the lake remains extremely cold. Moreover, the river Madhyamaheshwar Ganga emerges from this lake.
