Mandira Dam, Rourkela

The Mandira Dam is among the most famous tourist attractions of Rourkela. The dam was built by Hirakud Project Authority between the years 1957 and 1959. The location of the dam is a beautiful one. It is situated at the entry point of the river Shankha into the gorge. The beauty of the hills surrounding the place adds to its majestic charm.

The dam was built with the aim to serve the Rourkela Steel Plant. The dam was utilized for storing and supplying water to the plant that stands at a distance of a few kilometres from it. The Mandira Dam is situated at a distance of nearly 32 km from the city of Rourkela.

There is a huge reservoir which is used for fishiculture. Visitors can enjoy boat rides in the reservoir. The place is famous as a picnic spot. Fishing is also a popular activity enjoyed by the visitors of the dam.
