Balidan Bhawan, Rajouri

Balidan Bhawan is a popular tourist attraction that is located at the Gujjar Mandi Chowk in the town of Rajouri. This site, otherwise known as the War Memorial, had been built to commemorate the civilians who lost their lives during the war of 1947-48.

The war took place in the year 1947 during the festival of Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights. During that night, Pakistani forces took over the town in the absence of the Indian army. On 13th April, 1948, during the occasion of Baisakhi, the harvest festival in Punjab, the Indian Army finally succeeded to liberate the town.

The martyrs are honoured at this memorial which is why the site has been named as ‘Balidan Bhavan’ that stands for ‘memorial of sacrifices’.
