  • 01Watson Museum

    This oldest museum in the region of Saurashtra is a must-visit destination in Gujarat. Courtesy: its calm greenish environ and the precisest interesting artefacts and paintings it accommodates. Located in the Queen Victoria Memorial Institute Building in Jubilee Gardens, it is named after Colonel John Watson who held the position of the political agent of Kathiawar Agency during 1881 and 1889.

    While the museum houses an array of Watson's own collections, it also includes an interesting numismatics section, artefacts from the ancient history and the Mohenjodaro era and textiles and jewellery used by people of the local tribes to name a few. The museum is open between 9 am and 6 pm daily and is closed on alternate Sundays and general holidays.

  • 02Kaba Gandhi No Delo

    Karamchand Gandhi, the father of Mahatma Gandhi, also known by the name Kaba Gandhi resided at this heritage home called Kaba Gandhi No Delo on Ghee Kanta Road in Rajkot and it is here the Mahatma spent his childhood days.

    Presently turned into a museum on the life of the leader and called the Gandhi Smriti, it houses various photographs, artifacts and belongings of Mahatma Gandhi. The expo is open to the public six days a week between 9 am and 5 pm.

    Lang Library

    For those who hold an interest in literature and love reading, being here would mean a feast. Such is the beauty of the collection at the famous Lang Library in Rajkot. The repository located in the Jubilee Gardens boosts of an excellent assemblage of age old books, especially those on the Kathiawadi and Gujarati literature. It also has a wonderful collection of reference material connected to the colonial period.

  • 04Khambhalida Caves

    Like many other caves in our country, these too are architectural wonders. Located close by Gondal in Rajkot, present here are three caves of which the central one is a 'Chaitya' housing a stupa. Etched out of the limestone rock, the caves are said to belong to the 4th-5th century AD.

  • 07Rajkumar College

    Situated in the heart of Rajkot, the Rajkumar College happens to be one of the country's oldest educational institutions. Established for the education of the young Kathiawar princes and to groom them into being successful rulers and gentlemen, the college came into existence under the order of the British in the year 1868 and was formally inaugurated in 1870.

    Spread across an area of 26 acres, the land is home to a range of beautiful buildings reflecting the old world charm and the college better known as 'RKC' is said to have tutored some famous personalities like Krishna Kumar Singh Bhavsinh (the first governor of Madras state), Ashok Kamte (the additional commissioner of Mumbai Police East Region who got killed in the 2008 Mumbai attacks), cricketer Kumar Sinh Duleepsinhji and poet Kavi Kalapi to name a few.

    Situated around 53 km from Rajkot, Virpur is a town famous for being the birth place of Jalaram Bapa, a saint who was a staunch follower of Lord Rama. It is the only temple in India that has not accepted any money from pilgrims so far.

    Presently, the Rashtriyashala provides education and training in projects such as manual oil pressing and weaving cotton and khadi. The school is functional from 9 am to 12 pm.

    Hingolgadh will interest wildlife enthusiasts. For, it is famous for a fascinating nature education sanctuary it houses within. With the sanctuary here boasting of a wide variety of flora and fauna, it was aptly declared as an Eco-education centre in the year 1984 and has been named by the Gujarat Ecological Education and Research Foundation as the Hingolgadh Nature Education Sanctuary.

    It is home to a wide variety of reptiles and animals like the endangered Chinkara, wolf, bluebull, hyaena, porcupine and flying foxes, and birds like spotted dove, bulbul, woodpecker and others.
