Port Blair Tourism – The Capital of the Andamans

Port Blair, the capital of the union territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is situated on the South Andaman Island, the largest island group of the Andaman lot. Situated south of the island, Port Blair offers conducive tropical weather the year round and also receives its share of rain making for a perfect holiday destination. It’s pretty famous among both foreigners and Indians with few areas on the island having been reserved for non-Indians.

Port Blair, as a city is important for various reasons. It is the headquarters of the Indian Tri-Services command which means it has a lot of Indian Air force, Navy and Coast guard presence. It is home to some fun beaches and holiday places which makes it a tourist favorite. And it’s home to the notorious Kala Paani prison which translates to the ‘Black Waters’ prison, one that has been famous since the late 1800s.

The Kala Paani prison was constructed in the late 1800s by the British colonialists to house Indian political prisoners during their freedom struggle. What makes it so notorious is the gruesome torture techniques used by the British back then which could only be whispered among the general populace.

You might want to visit the famous marine park while in Port Blair which is essentially an assortment of marine activity; marine life and mini-tours spread over a hundred and fifty odd islands. Depending on your appetite for marine life, the tour can be expanded and condensed to last anywhere from a few hours to a few days.
