    The Panhala Fort is a signature fort of the region of Panhala. It goes by the same name as the city it is named after and is the largest and most magnificent fort of the Deccan region. This monument was built by King Raja Bhoj in and around the 12th Century, almost 900 years back.

    The fort was built for defense purposes and can be entered only through the sturdy double-walled entrance. This historic landmark takes you back into history at that point in time when the Marathas were the greatest rulers in India. The fort has attracted tourists by the droves for decades and continues to do the same still.

  • 02Ambarkhana Fort

    Ambarkhana Fort

    The Fort of Ambarkhana is a must visit while you visit Panhala. The fort was built under the Marathas and stands strong and tall even to this day. The administrative division and the palace – Mint – were accommodated in this fort.

    The nearby age old building called Dhanyancha Kothar was used to pile and store food grains. There are three granaries in all, namely the Ganga, Jamuna and Saraswati. Each of them could store up to 25,000 khandis of grain.

    Empress Botanical Garden

    The Empress Botanical Garden is a hot spot for picnic activities in the region of Panhala. The Garden is replete with tall trees and huge lawns making the area quite desirable – especially amongst the kids. There is an arched gateway that acts as the entrance into this garden. The Bund Gardens nearby are equally amazing. Visitors can indulge in activities like boat rides and horse riding while they are here.

  • 04Sajja Kothi

    The Sajja Kothi was built in 1008 A.D. Situated in the district of Panhala, it documents the story of how Shivaji Maharaj escaped from the Jaws of death. Sajja Kothi literally translates to the ‘Punishment Cell’.

    The building is three storied long and is a testimony to Mughal architecture. The place is also associated with Sambaji who was jailed by his own father for his criminal delinquent activities. The Sajja Kothi is based right in the middle of lush greenery and one can espy the magnificent Warana Valley from here.

  • 05Teen Darwaza

    Teen Darwaza literally translates to Three Doors. Found in Panhala, the three consecutive gates constitute a grand entrance to the Panhala Fort and is the very place from where the British invaded Panhala.

    The well located near the Teen Darwaza was actually used as an effective medium to convey messages to the enemy – a brilliant and eloquent means of communication. A lemon would hold the message and be dropped in the well water which would float to the lake, all the way to the enemy. Teen Darwaza speaks highly of the rich cultural heritage that Panhala was once a part of and is a must visit.
