Gandhi Sagar Dam, Neemuch

The Gandhi Sagar Dam located in the Mandsaur district near Neemuch in Madhya Pradesh is among the major tourist attractions of the state. Being a major dam built on the Chambal river, the foundation stone of this dam was laid on 7th March 1954 by none other than the then Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

Being the second largest reservoir of India, the Gandhi Sagar Dam provides shelter to thousands of migratory birds, thus resulting in the certification of the reservoir by the International Bird Life Agency. The dam is 204 ft high and 514 ft long.

It also has a splendid hydro electric power station on the right bank. The fact that a spillway of the dam discharges 21,238 cubic meters per seconds, shows that the dam is extremely huge. In the context of both research and tourism, the Gandhi Sagar Dam is of immense importance.
