  • 01Tipu's Drop

    While exploring Nandi Hills, travellers must visit a 600 m high cliff, known as Tipu's Drop. According to historical facts, this cliff was used as a punishing ground for the convicts. Prisoners serving death sentence were pushed down from the Tipu's drop.

    This site is situated on top of the Nandi Hills and from this point the tourists can see the beautiful hill ranges. Travellers visiting Tipu's Drop on a windy night can hear the rustling noise of the leaves of the trees. As per local belief, this rustling noise is the wailing of the prisoners who were pushed from the Tipu's Drop.

  • 02Nandi Temple

    Nandi Temple is one of the 'must visit' attractions of Nandi Hills, which was constructed during the rule of Kempe Gowda in the Vijayanagar period. This pilgrimage site is located on the foot hills of Nandi Hills and is regarded as one of the most revered shrines of the area.

    Yoganandeeshwara and Bhoganandishwara are the presiding deities of this temple. This structure was constructed during the period of Hoysalas, Banas, Cholas and Vijayanagar Kings and is adorned with unique metal work and carved pillars. Upon reaching the site, devotees can see a lamp tower that has been built in front of the Nandi Temple. This lamp tower is lighted on a daily basis.

    Yoga Nandeeshwara Temple

    While on a trip to Nandi Hills, tourists must visit Yoga Nandeeshwara Temple that was constructed by the Cholas. This pilgrimage site is one of the oldest shrines in the region and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There are beautiful designs and carvings on the sculptures and walls.

    The attractive Kalyana Mantapa is another feature of the Yoga Nandeeshwara Temple. The complex of this ancient temple is guarded at the entrance by two Dwarapalakas. An inscription of 'Sambhaji' (Chhatrapati Shivaji's son) is another feature and one of the chief attractions of Yoga Nandeeshwara Temple.

    Devotees offer prayers to deities by enchanting an inscription, known as 'Kodi Maram', which has been engraved on the wall of the temple.

    Travellers on a trip to Nandi Hills are recommended to visit the Nehru Nilaya bungalow that represents the British architectural style. This bungalow was named after the first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru as he had stayed at this place for some time.

    The Nehru Nilaya bungalow is an important site as it was the summer retreat for the then Commissioner of Mysore, Sir Mark Cubbon K.C.B. Moreover, Nehru Nilaya was also the venue for the SAARC Summit that took place in the year 1986.

    Horticulture department of India has transformed Nehru Nilaya into a guest house. No one can enter inside the building but tourists are given permission to take pictures of the beautiful panoramas of this site. Upon reaching this bungalow, tourists will notice that playing and seating facilities are available for public along the sides of the Nehru Nilaya.

    The responsibility of sanitation, clean water, employment and schooling facilities for Kanivenarayanapura has been taken up by the Children of Sathya Sai Baba Foundation.     According to the natives, Mahatma Gandhi had made a stopover in this town while on his way to Nandi village. Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace is a popular attraction located in the vicinity of Kanivenarayanapura.

    Tippu's Summer Palace And Fort

    If time permits, then travellers visiting Nandi Hills are recommended to explore Tipu's Summer Palace and Fort. It covers an area of about 90 acres and is situated at a height of 4,851 ft above sea level. The Fort has a striking resemblance to Dariya Daulat, Srirangapatna.

    The construction of Tipu Sultan's Fort was started by Chikballapur chieftains and was completed in 1791 by Tipu Sultan. This renowned site acted as an ideal summer resort for Tipu Sultan and therefore, he decided to name the site 'Tashk-e-Jannat' that stands for 'envy of heaven'.

    Upon reaching the site, tourists will notice that the structure is made of wood. Towers and archways are ornately engraved that represent the architectural style adopted during that time. The ceilings and walls of this fort have been imprinted with paintings.

    The highlights of the fort are its five arches with minarets. Archways and towers are the other highlighting features of this site. General public is not permitted to go inside the Tipu's palace.
