    Dikhu river is one of the most prominent rivers of Nagaland. The river flows across the Mokokchung and the Longleng districts. It is one of the major tourist attractions of Longleng.     The Dikhu river is one of the tributaries of Brahmaputra, one of the mightiest rivers of India. The Dikhu river is not only a prime tourist attraction, but also a significant source of livelihood for the people. The water makes the area around the river fertile. Since Longleng is primarily an agricultural district, the Dikhu river serves as a lifeline to its people. Thanks to the heavy monsoons, the Dikhu river, doesn’t dry during the harvest season.

    Nagaland University is a Central University of India established in the year 1994. It has its campuses at Kohima, Dimapur, Medziphema and Zunheboto. The university headquarters is located in Lumami village in the Zunheboto district of Nagaland.

    Nagaland University has 54 colleges affiliated to it. Approximately about 25000 students are registered to the university every year. The university offers courses in Humanities and Education, Social Science, Agricultural Science and Rural Development, Engineering and Management.

    Zunheboto, an otherwise tucked-away destination of Nagaland has become prominent as the university is located here. Due to this reason, today Zunheboto has become a cultural hub where all the Naga tribal communities come and intermingle.

    The university is located amidst greenery enhancing the environment and making it perfect for education. Due to its ideal geographical location with its immense flora, fauna and agriculture, stress is given on agricultural science and rural development.

  • 03Changsangmongko,Tuensang

    Changsangmongko

    The tribe of Chang is believed to be the first settlers of Changsangmongko, a village located in between Tuensang and the Hakchung village in Nagaland. The Changs are one of the prominent tribes of Nagaland largely inhibiting the district of Tuensang. Changsangmongko falls under the Tuensang district. It is traditionally believed that the living creatures had emerged from a big hole in the earth.

    There is a raised platform in the village called Mullang. Mullang is believed to be built by the Chang ancestors representing development and prosperity of its people. It is also commonly said in folklore that the Mullang was transformed into a public court during the evolution of the world.

    The place was used to settle village issues. You can easily travel to Changsangmongko from Tuensang on tourist vehicles or buses. The village can be seen in a day and you can return to Tuensang by night.

    Dimapur Ao Baptist Church

    Located in the heart of Dimapur is the Dimapur Ao Baptist Church which is a must visit for anyone coming to this place. The church is a congregation of 5000 Ao families in and around Dimapur and has 15000 baptized members making it the largest Baptist Church in India.

    The church is large enough to house a congregation of around 10,000 members at any point of time. A Sunday Mass at this church is a sight to see when the followers come dressed in traditional and formal attire. The half a century old Church is an architectural masterpiece standing tall and delivering the message of serenity, peace and brotherhood.

    From a humble beginning in 1958 by two Ao families, the church has grown to becoming an institution serving the poor and the needy and spreading God’s message. Every year during Christmas the church is decorated with lights which add to its grandeur.

    Doyang river had been a popular destination with the tourists visiting Wokha, but in the recent years, the Doyang Hydro Project has become one of the biggest tourist attractions for people visiting the town of Wokha. The 75 MW hydro power project, which is being constructed over the Doyang river has become famous for some of the breathtaking views that it offers.

    This dam and reservoir is located 38 km from the town of Wokha and offers an exciting scenic tour. You can easily get sight of the dam from the hilltop of some villages of Wokha.     Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary

    The Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary in Kiphire district is ideal for nature lovers and animal enthusiasts. The sanctuary is considered to be an abode for many wildlife animals such as leopards, tigers, wild buffaloes, hoolock gibbons and mithun. Hornbill, the most popular bird in Nagaland is also abundantly found in the Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary.

    The wildlife sanctuary is spread over 642 hectares. It was established in the year 1983, and it lies along the international border with Myanmar. The sanctuary is not only an abode for animals, but abundant flora to be found here too.

    The important trees to be found here are Bogipoma, Bonsum, Khasi Pine, Amari, Oaks, Gamari, Nahor, Uriam, Hollock, Alder, Sasi and Kachnar. Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary is located in such a geographic location that it receives high rainfall facilitating the growth of abundant flora. The nearest airport to the Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary is Dimapur from where easy road transports can be availed.

    Khezhakeno

    A visit to a small village in the Phek district can be one of the most memorable trips for tourists. Khezhakeno is a legendary village with history and mythology all mingling and becoming one. It is believed that many Naga tribes have originated from Khezhakeno and migration led them to the other parts of the region. According to another popular legend, the village has a stone slab from which paddy miraculously multiply when placed on any drying land.

    Though the stone is still found in the village, the magic and the mystery is not there anymore. Tourists can reach the legendary village of Khezhakeno from Tadubi in Manipur or Pfutsero in the Phek district. Roads are the main communication lifeline to this village and taxis can easily be availed from the above towns. Khezhakeno is about 22 kilometres from the district headquarters of Phek and falls under the jurisdiction of the Pfutsero tehsil.

    Kohima State Museum

    Kohima State Museum offers tourists 360 degree insight into the history and culture of Nagaland and the tribes. Established in the year 1970 by the government of Nagaland, this museum is located at Bayavü Hill, about one-and-a-half kilometres from the heart of the town. The museum showcases various aspects of Naga life and tradition, including their arts and artefacts, ancient weaponry, colourful traditional dresses, Naga cuisine amongst others.

    The museum has a rare collection of precious stones including cornelian, tourmaline, coral and other artefacts made out of brass and silver bells. Apart from this ceremonial attire of various Naga tribes, their musical instruments are also on display, including the log drum and Tati, which is a single-stringed instrument. The models of the Naga morung or the traditional huts of the different tribes are some of the biggest attractions of the museum.

    Mokokchung District Museum

    Mokokchung is considered to be an important town of Nagaland because of its strong Ao presence. Since Mokokchung is the Ao heartland of Nagaland, there are several interesting things that can be found about the Ao tribe here. The best place to find all of them and, surprisingly, much more is the Mokokchung District Museum. The district museum reflects the ways and lives of the Aos over centuries.

    Mokokchung District Museum is housed inside the Arts and Cultural Complex of the district. Swords, shields, traditional attire, such as the famous Naga shawls, traditional jewellery and accessories are some of the artefacts on display here in the museum. A well-planned visit to the Mokokchung District Museum also enables tourists to see the marked distinctions between the Ao tribes and the others tribes of Nagaland as well as the rest of the country. Spend a few good hours in the museum and learn a lot more about the Aos.

  • 10Ntangki National Park,Peren

    Ntangki National Park

    Located 40 km from the town of Peren and about 37 km from Dimapur is the Ntangki National Park also known as the Intanki by many. Spread over a distance of 200 sq km, this park was established by the British administrators in the year 1923.

    Considered one of the best National Parks in the North East, it has thick rain forests which creates natural habitat for many birds, reptiles and mammals. Mountains, cliffs and dense forests make it a great place for camping and other adventurous activities.

    Here in this National Park you can see wild buffaloes (mithun) and hoolok gibbon which is found only in Nagaland. Apart from this the park also boasts of tigers, sloth bear, wild dogs and flying squirrels, making it a must visit spot for any tourist coming to this district.     Also known as Pak Koi, Veda Peak is the highest peak of the Mon district in Nagaland. Situated approximately 70 kilometres from the district headquarters, you will experience a picturesque view of the mountains and the rivers from Veda Peak, which will surely mesmerise you. You can view the mighty Brahmaputra and the Chindwin rivers from the peak on a clear day.

    There is also a waterfall near the peak. The area around the waterfalls is considered to be one of the most beautiful locations in the entire Konyak countryside.
