Chauthi Jaali, Mukteshwar

Chauthi Jaali or Chauli ki Jaali is a famous tourist site located adjacent to the Mukteshwar Temple. Nestled on a hilltop, this site offers picturesque views of the Kumaon Valley and the Himalayan ranges. According to a legend, this is the same site where a demon and a goddess fought a battle. The evidence of the battle, such as a shield, an elephant's trunk and faint outlines of a sword, can still be seen at this place.

A legend is associated with the natural pattern of the rock here. It is believed that if a barren woman succeeds in taking her head out of the lattice, then she is blessed with a baby.

According to another legend, a group of devotees got stuck at this place due to a huge rock, during their Kailash-Mansarovar yatra. They prayed to Lord Shiva to help them, and the lord instructed the guru to strike the rock four times. When the guru hit the rock the fourth time a hole appeared on the surface of the rock.
