Mashobra Tourism - The Presidential Retreat in the Hills

Mashobra is a popular tourist destination located in the district of Shimla. As a beautiful town in the hills, this place is well known among visitors for its mesmerising sceneries and cool climate. Located at an elevation of 2500 m above sea level, Mashobra is situated on the banks of the River Indus and Ganga and regarded as the largest watershed of Asia.

Tourist places in and around Mashobra

Travellers planning to visit Mashobra must head towards Reserve Forest Sanctuary, which offers an opportunity to observe rare flora and fauna found in this region. Trekking, camping, and picnicking are some of the activities that visitors can enjoy here.

Apart from these, Shimla is another prominent tourist hotspot in the vicinity of Mashobra, located at a distance of 10 km. Popularly known as the 'Queen of Hills', this place also provides travellers with the opportunity to visit the Himachal State Museum and Library.Naldehra, Wild Flower Hall, and Carignano are some of the other major attractions of Mashobra that are visited by many tourists everyday.

Apart from these, Mahasu Fair is a popular festival of this place. Also, known as 'Mahasu Jatara', this festival is celebrated in honour of Lord Mahasu, the chief deity of the village. This is a two-day festival celebrated in front of the Durga Devi Temple on the third Tuesday in May each year.

According to the biographies of Lady Mountbatten and Lady Edwina, Mashobra was founded by Lord Dalhousie in 18th century. This place is home to one of the only two Presidential retreats in India. One of the specialities of Mashobra is fruits and the town acts as one of the main suppliers of fruits and vegetables to Shimla.This destination is known for being located in the vicinity of Shimla and its numerous tourist attractions, such as Reserve Forest Sanctuary and Mahasu Devta Temple. A temple dedicated to Mahasu Devta, the local name of Lord Shiva, is also present here, which attracts many pilgrims every year.

Tourists can visit this destination during the summers, which start in April and lasts till June, as the climate remains pleasant and comfortable. Winters in this town are known for low temperatures, which can drop to -10° C. Therefore, tourists who are not comfortable with extreme cold weather are advised to avoid Mashobra in this season.
