Vamanamoorthy Temple, Kochi

The Vamanamoorthy temple, located in a small village called Thirikkara, is popularly known as Thirikkakara Temple. The temple is placed at a distance of 10 km from the Ernakulum town. The temple complex is placed in a vast scenic area, and the presiding deity of the temple is Lord Vamana, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

The most important festival celebrated here is Onam. According to legends, Lord Vamana sent the ancient King of Kerala, Mahabali, to the abyss (Paathalam) in order to stop the good and the mighty king taking over heaven.

Onam is a 10 days long festival celebrated to commemorate this event and it is believed that King Mahabali visits his subjects every year during Onam. Since Lord Vamana is related to the legend of Onam, the festival is celebrated here with great zeal. The Onasadya (Onam feast) attracts a large number of devotes during the season.
