In Khandwa, there are many Jain and Hindu temples. The 12th century saw the rise in the Jain faith and Khandwa turned out to be the centre of Jainism. Khandwa at different ages changed with time.

During the British rule, Khandwa was considered to be the main commercial hub of the Nimaad region. Apart from the massive infrastructure, the phenomenal singer Kishore Kumar was born in Khandwa.
