Durga Devi Temple, Kaushambi

As the name suggests, Durga Devi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga who symbolizes the female power and invincibility. The goddess has multiple arms holding an array of varied weapons and riding a ferocious tiger or a lion. She is shown slaying the demons, especially the buffalo demon Mahishasura.

Goddess Durga represents the female power at its most virtuous and intense levels. The temple is situated approximately 1 km in the south western side of Mahajanpur town in Kaushambi district. It is believed to have been built in the 4th century BC.

The sanctum sanctorum of the temple houses not only the black stone idol of Goddess Durga but of Lord Shiva as well. It attracts a large number of visitors all the year round. It wears a festive look during the Navratri days when huge crowds of devotees visit it to celebrate victory of the goddess over evil and also pray for her blessings.
