  • 01Sheetla Temple

    Sheetla Temple

    Located on the bank of Ganga river about 69 km in the west of Allahabad, Sheetla Temple is considered to be one of the most important shrines of cosmic importance or shaktipeeths dedicated to goddess Sati Parvati, the supreme incarnation of female power in the Hindu religion.

    There are 51 shaktipeeths in India. It is believed that the temple is more than one thousand years old. The statue lodged in the sanctum sanctorum shows the Goddess Sheetla Devi sitting on a gardhbha or an ass.

    Kara where the temple is situated is an ancient township. It has been the seat of several ruling Hindu dynasties since the medieval times. The remnants of the fort of the last ruler of Kannauj, Raja Jai Chand, lying close to the temple can still be seen by the tourists who visit this place in large numbers.

    Devotees of the goddess Sheetla believe that her worship particularly on ashtami, the eighth day of Krishnapaksha can rid them of all the evil influences. The shrine not only attracts Hindus but believers of other faiths as well.

    It is believed that the place where this teerathsthan - pilgrimage centre - is situated was consecrated by several visits and sermons of Lord Mahavir. The magnificent temple is embellished with intricate yet beautiful designs that testify to the artistic skills of the craftsmen of those times. The main attraction of the temple is the 30 cm tall white idol of Lord Padmaprabha seated in padmasan with a very calm and tranquil face.

    It has been carved out of a single stone. The temple also contains the footprints of the Teerathankar. It also offers a view of an ancient fort with twenty gates built by Maharani Mrugavati, currently in a ruined state. The temple is situated on the bank of river Yamuna, approximately 1 km from Gadhva Kushal village.

  • 04Old Kaushambi

    The history of Old Kaushambi dates back to even pre-Ramayan and Mahabharat periods. It was the capital of the Vatsa Mahajanapada, which was one of the 16 regions mentioned in the Mahabharata. It is mentioned in the Purana, Ramayana and Mahabharata, that the city was founded by a Chedi prince Kusa or Kusamba.

    Kaushambi was regarded as one of the six most prosperous cities of India during the lifetime of Buddha. It was the junction of the routes for travellers from all the four corners of the country and therefore a hub of its trade and commerce. The excavations in the city have also discovered several old coins, sculptures, idols, stupas and monuments that speak of its glorious history.

    Some of the monuments include the Ashoka Pillar, a Jain temple, a stone fortress and Ghositarma Monastery. The place was consecrated by the visits and sermons of Buddha after the 6th and 9th year of his enlightenment. The old Kaushambi is, therefore, an important pilgrim destination of the Buddhists.

    Durga Devi Temple

    As the name suggests, Durga Devi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga who symbolizes the female power and invincibility. The goddess has multiple arms holding an array of varied weapons and riding a ferocious tiger or a lion. She is shown slaying the demons, especially the buffalo demon Mahishasura.

    Goddess Durga represents the female power at its most virtuous and intense levels. The temple is situated approximately 1 km in the south western side of Mahajanpur town in Kaushambi district. It is believed to have been built in the 4th century BC.

    The sanctum sanctorum of the temple houses not only the black stone idol of Goddess Durga but of Lord Shiva as well. It attracts a large number of visitors all the year round. It wears a festive look during the Navratri days when huge crowds of devotees visit it to celebrate victory of the goddess over evil and also pray for her blessings.

    Ghoshit Ram Vihar

    Ghoshit Ram Vihar or monastery finds reverential mention in the Buddhist scriptures. It is one of the main attractions of the area for the Buddhist pilgrims. The construction of the vihar dates back to the life time of the Buddha. It was built by a businessman named Ghoshit Ram so that Lord Buddha and his disciples could stay in it during their visit to Kaushambi.

    It is believed that Lord Buddha frequently visited this place along with his followers and also delivered sermons to the people of the area. Some ‘Bhagnashes’ were discovered in the course of the excavations carried out at this historical place. They have been transferred to the Allahabad Museum to be displayed as exhibits of those times.
