Jasrota, Kathua

Jasrota, a region of royal power in ancient time, was founded by King or Raja Jas Dev of Jammu in the year 1019. After some time, he gave the responsibility of the entire region to his uncle, Jasrota to Raja Karan Dev. During the reign of Gulab Singh, the King of Jammu and Kashmir in 1846, the place was transformed into a district.

The leaders of Jasrota were known as the Jamwals or the Jasrotias. An old temple of Hindu goddess Maha Kali is situated on a small hill in Jasrota. Over the years, this temple has become one of the most famous popular religious sites in the district of Kathua.
