Kondana Caves, Karjat

The Kondana Caves are located in Karjat. They give a peek into the ancient lifestyle that the Buddhists followed. These ancient rock-cut caves encompass several sculptures, Stupas, Viharas and Chaityas. These caves date back to the 2nd century, making them almost 2000 years old.

The sculptures and Stupas are representatives of the Buddhist architecture that was adopted in those times. The carvings inside the caves depict varied dancing poses of men and women. Unfortunately, a major natural disaster in the form of an earthquake ruined the entrance, floors and several Stupas of these caves.

Annually, these medieval-era caves are thronged by plenty of Buddhist devotees. Drinking alcohol and smoking is strictly prohibited to maintain the sanctity of the holy shrine.
