Vivaran Kovil, Karaikudi

The Vivaran Kovil temple is located on the road that connects the town of Karaikudi with the town of Madurai. The temple is about 10 km from Karaikudi and is easily accessible via local buses and private taxis.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Bhairava, one of the many forms of Lord Shiva. Every day many devotees throng to the temple to seek the blessings of Lord Bhairava and to make offerings of various kinds to Him. Outside the temple is a spring, and it is believed that one must oneself before proceeding to offer prayers to Lord Bhairava in the temple.

Legend has it that the location of the temple is associated with Lord Rama as well. In this place the Lord had received news from Lord Hanuman that His wife Sita was alive and safe in Lanka. On hearing the news of her safety as well as looking at her jewelry as an evidence of this, Lord Rama broke down and profusely thanked Hanuman.
