3

The Salar Jung Museum is a renowned museum showcasing the rich and splendid history of Hyderabad. The museum also holds national importance since it has the distinction of being one among the three national museums of the country. The museum houses a wide range of collectables from various countries like Persia, Japan, Europe, North America, China, Nepal, Burma, Egypt and even from different parts of India.

The museum has an amazing and enviable collection of carpets, furniture, sculptures, paintings, manuscripts, ceramics, textiles, clocks and metallic objet d’art. All these collections are part of the Salar Jung family and are heirlooms passed from one generation to another. Interestingly, some of the items in this collection date back to as old as 1st century AD and Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan Salar Jung III used a major part of his wealth in collecting these treasures over a period of 35 years. It is believed that caretakers swindled away most part of the collection and what remains now is only half of the original.
