Hathi Pool, Gwalior

The Hathi Pool is the main entrance to the Gwalior Fort. It can be accessed only after passing six other entrances of the fort. It is also the seventh and last gate which one has to pass to enter the Gwalior Fort. Through this gate, one gets direct entry to Man Mandir Palace which was constructed by King Man Singh.

There was once a big stone structure of a life size elephant on this entrance to this fort. One of the reasons for naming this gate as the Hathi Pool may be that. Another reason could be that the entrance is so big that even an elephant can pass through it. That may be the reason to name it after Hathi or an elephant. The Hathi Pool has cylindrical towers covered with cupola domes which make it attractive.
