After the partition of India, to rehabilitate the Sindhis of Pakistan on request of Gandhiji, the Maharaja of Kutch, His Highness Maharao Shri Vijayrajji Khengarji Jadeja benevolently donated a land of 15,000 acres for the purpose. Bhai Pratap Dialdas, under the guidance of Gandhiji took the initiative to rehabilitate the displaced refugees of Pakistan. A homeland was planned at a site where the climate and language were akin to the place they came from.
Tourist Places in and around Gandhidham
The sea port of Kandla is also a tourist attraction. The Bhardeshwar Temple of Gandhidham, consecrated to Shri Chandra Prabhuji Bhagvan is an important religious spot for the Jains. Other religious spots near Gandhidham are the Akshardham and the Purneshwar Temples. Gandhidham experiences a sort of extreme climate as the summers are quite hot whereas the winters have cold waves.
The Sindhu Resettlement Corporation Ltd. was formed, and the new township of Gandhidham was founded. Kandla was the first special economic zone(SEZ) to be established in India and in Asia, and because of the free trade zone related activities Kandla along with Gandhidham has improved quite rapidly.
The weather is quite unpleasant always in Gandhidham.
