Kotkapura, named after its founder Nawab Kapura Singh, is well-known as the 'City of White Gold' owing to its large cotton market, which is considered to be one of the best in the world. The most crowded market here is the Shastri Market or Maheshwary Street, which was established by the Maheshwary family in 1875.
