East Khasi Hills is one of the seven districts of Meghalaya. It is one of the most populous districts of the state with the state capital Shillong serving as its district headquarters. There are several tourist destinations in the district making it one of the most visited places in the small state of Meghalaya.
East Khasi Hills tourism is vibrant, energetic and diverse. If Shillong offers serene locations, the other blocks of the district showcase the majestic beauty of Nature. Smit is an idyllic little Khasi village that is the seat of the Hima Khyrem.
If the traditional annual dance at Smit is a treat to watch, Mawlynnong village, located a few kilometres from Smit, has a complete different story to say. It is considered the cleanest village in Asia. One can truly feel (and not just see) cleanliness all around.
Another attraction in the East Khasi Hills district is Laitkynsew, the place where a hundred-year-old living root exists. Living root bridges showcase the architectural brilliance of the indigenous tribe - Khasis and tourists should not miss it for anything. Roots of living trees are bent and made into a pathway over a river for human thoroughfare.
East Khasi Hills tourism is however, incomplete without a visit to Mawphlang, the land of the sacred groves.
