    Someshwar Nath Mahadev Mandir is an age-old temple located in Aeraj. The major deity of the holy temple is of Lord Shiva. Pilgrims and devotees of Lord Shiva come to the shrine not only from India but also from Nepal.

    The festivities on the occasion of a seasonal fair known as Shrawani Mela, during July and August, are magically divine. There are many other temples in the area around and for this reason only, Aeraj is known as the holy city of East Champaran.

  • 02Ashokan pillar

    The Ashokan pillar is a lofty stone pillar erected by King Ashoka in the 249 BC in a village named Lauriya. The pillar is a single block of polished sandstone—36 ½ feet in height and a base diameter of 41.8 inches narrowing to a diameter of 37.6 inches at the top. Actual weight of the whole block is estimated to be about 40 tons.

    Kesariya is situated on the eastern banks of the river Gandak and beholds the huge 104-feet-tall stupa, which is considered the tallest Buddhist stupa. Accordingly, Kesariya commands prominent positions in East Champaran tourism as well as history of Buddhism.

    The stupa was discovered in the year 1998 and is one foot taller than the famous Borobudur Stupa in Java, which is a World Heritage Monument. The story of the begging bowl and many other recorded events in the Jataka Katha elaborate the legends of the place.
