Mettur is one of the largest dams in the entire state of Tamil Nadu. It is situated in the Salem district. It is built in a gorge on the Kaveri river. The Kaveri is a very swift flowing river. The dam is said to be the largest source of supplying electricity all across the district.

This dam is located in the town of Mettur and is famous for its religious significance as well. The place is located in such a route that the bus services and the private car services are available in a cheap manner to the other parts of the state.

Aadi Perukku is the most famous festival that is being conducted in this area every year. The Mettur dam is also known as the Stanley reservoir by the people of the state. In the Mettur dam there are two hydro electric power stations.
