  • 01Dhanbad Coal Mines

    Mining is one of the significant occupations of the people residing in and around Dhanbad. Mines and minerals are the main source of the economy in Jharkhand. Iron and steel, coal and mica are some of the treasures which forms the principal industries of the state.

    Places around Dhanbad are rich in coalfields. There are 112 coal mines which have made the city one of the busiest commercial centres of India. 27.5 million tonnes of coal are produced which brings 7000 million Rupees to the state.

    Coal washeries are also present here. Power-generating plants are also set up in various parts of the city. While Maithon and Panchet are responsible for hydro power, Tata Power and Damodar Valley Corporation are responsible for thermal power production.

    Some of the mines are generating power with the help of ONGC which is using CBM. BCCL is responsible for mining activities and operating coking coal mines in Jharia and Raniganj Coalfields. DGMS is a government agency which takes care of safety in mines.

    Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) is the first coal mining company which supplies coal to power and steel industries of the nation. Jharia, 10km from Dhanbad is a rich storehouse of coal. For several years there has been fire in the mines below the town.

    Indian School of Mines is a renowned technical institute that deals with various branches of science like mining, geology, geophysics, petroleum, mineral and others.

  • 02Shakti Mandir

    Shakti Mandir

    Shakti Mandir is a revered Hindu Temple in Dhanbad. Dedicated to Goddess Durga, the temple is situated in the city itself. Devotees throng here all round the year. Goddess Durga is also known as Goddess of Shakti or Power. It is thus named after the power of Goddess Durga.

    The temple is situated on Joraphatak Road which is almost in the heart of the city. Shakti Mandir owns ‘Akhand Jyoti’ or eternal flame which is brought from Vaishno Devi. It is the main attraction for which people turn up to this temple. Bhajanas, jagrans and kirtans are regularly carried out by the devotees.

    Shakti Mandir is heavily crowded during occasions like Diwali and Dussehera. Tuesdays and Fridays of the week are considered to be special days and thus people make a mandatory visit on these days.

  • 03Birsa Munda Park

    Birsa Munda Park

    Birsa Munda Park is one of the major tourist attractions of Dhanbad. It can be visited by people belonging to all age groups. It was inaugurated in November 2009 and thereby has gained enough popularity.

    Walkways in the park are preferred by the elderly generation while the play area with the toy train and various rides are enjoyed by the children. The park sprawls over 21 acres. A canteen is available to suffice gastronomic needs. Plants of various species decorate the entire park.

    Though it is still in the process of completion, more than 12 lacs revenue has already been generated from the park. It is the first park that Dhanbad harbours which was earlier a barren plot of land with lack of fund for construction. MGNREGA took the responsibility of converting it into an attractive tourist destination.

    With a beautiful shape and stretches of greenery, Birsa Munda Park has become a must visit in the mining capital. Apart from providing recreation, the park has generated employment for many in the city. This park has been a stepping stone to three more projects which are coming up in various parts of the city.

  • 04Topchanchi Lake

    Topchanchi Lake is an interesting tourist spot in the Dhanbad district of Jharkhand. Situated on the National Highway 2, it is located at the Golden Quadrilateral. Dhanbad Railway Station is 37 km from the lake and Bokaro is 41 km. Though the lake is an artificial one, its green surrounding amidst forests and hills makes it an ideal picnic spot.

    It is also in demand for sound and serene vacations. It covers a total area of 214 acres. Parasnath Hills being located close by makes the tourists visit the lake at the same time. Topchanchi Lake is basically a stream which is dammed like a reservoir to supply water to the district and its suburban areas.

    Topchanchi Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over 8.75 sq km. The area is small enough yet few harmless animals reside here. A statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose is found in Topchanchi market as a sign of respect to this dauntless hero. The area surrounding the lake is also seeked by religious people, specially Jains and Hindus.

  • 05Panchet Dam

    Panchet Dam

    Panchet Dam is one of the multi-purpose dams of the Damodar Valley Corporation. It is 22,155 ft long and 124 ft high. Situated 54 km from Dhanbad Junction and 9 km from Chirkunda on Grand Trunk Road, the spot is highly in demand for a picnic.

    It extends to a length of 6 km and is constructed over river Damodar. 40,000 KW per hour is the power generated at the hydal station that was constructed on the eastern side of the dam. Panchet reservoir is on the south of Dhanbad district and north of Purulia district of West Bengal.

    Asansol is 20 km from Panchet Dam while the nearest railway station is Kumardhubi, distanced by 10 km. Damodar river was highly flood-prone. Maithon and Panchet dams have reduced the frequency of floods. Fishes like catla, rohu, mrigal and L. Calbasu are found in the Panchet reservoir. It signifies the reproduction of the fishes in the lake.

  • 06Maithon Dam

    Maithon Dam is 15,712 ft long and 165 ft high. It was primarily constructed to control floods. Situated at Maithon on Barakar river, it is 48 km from Dhanbad. It spreads over 65 sq km. An underground power station which was the first and foremost in entire South East Asia produces 60,000 KW of electric power.

    It is the biggest water reservoir of Damodar Valley Corporation. Kalyaneshwari Temple lies very close to the dam. Literally, Maithon means Mother's Abode. Deer park and bird sanctuary are other tourist attractions. Visitors can enjoy fishing and boating here.

    Tourists require prior permission to visit the powerhouse and guide services are also available from the office. Kumardhubi is the nearest railway station which is 5 km from Maithon while Barakar is 8 km.

    Regular bus service is available from Dhanbad, Barakar and Asansol. Private taxis are always available. Guests can relax at the rest house which is situated on an island in the lake. Tourist House and Tourist Bungalow Van Vihar are some of the halting options for the tourists. An innovative Tree Top House run by the government offers mesmerising views of the surrounding forest.
