During their course, the students of the institute, who are required to produce and perform plays before the public, get a solid hold on all aspects of theatre during their training.

NSD consists of two performing wings called Repertory Company and Sanskar Rang Toli or the Theatre-in-Education company. While the repertory company was established in the year 1964 and is into production works, organizing festivals and presentation of old and new plays, the Theatre-in-Education company was set up in 1989 and includes a group of actors turned teachers who work with and perform for kids. This company mostly concentrates on productions that are curriculum based creative plays that are enacted at schools for children of different age groups and hosts yearly theatre fests called the Jashn-e-Bachpan and Bal Sangam.

NSD has its own publication unit too, where text books on theatre are published and publications on thatres are translated from English to Hindi. NSD also has its regional resource centres across India, the first of which was opened at Bangalore in 1994.
