The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) is the first private art museum that exhibits works from India and the subcontinent. The museum was built as an initiative of Kiran Nadar, an avid collector of art works. The museum is an attempt to depict the intimate relationship between art and culture through its exhibitions, publications, educational and public programmes.
The growing collection of the museum mainly highlights the artworks done by the 20th-century artists from the post-independence period as well as the vibrant works by the younger contemporaries. The museum also serves as a platform for the art-lovers to observe, learn and compare the works of various present-day artists.
In Kiran Nadar’s words, “Though the idea of opening a private art museum occurred with the intention of sharing my art collection with the larger public, I was also acutely aware of the existing dearth of institutional spaces that could bring visibility to modern and contemporary art from India and the subcontinent.”
KNMA started its operations in January 2010 and is sponsored by Shiv Nadar Foundation. It helps the public to be aware of the contemporary art through its distinctive exhibitions at schools and colleges, symposiums, art appreciation discourses and public programmes.
The museum is truly a visual treat for those who enjoy art and would love to explore the same. You could be a part of their exhibitions and workshops which take place at regular intervals.
